The short version: the LidShutter app collects nothing about you. It checks your license key with our payment provider when you activate it, looks for new versions on lidshutter.com, and otherwise works offline. Everything else it knows stays on your Mac.
What the app stores
LidShutter saves a few things on your Mac so it can work the way you set it up:
- Your settings, such as your chosen sounds, volume, and whether it opens at login.
- The times you opened your lid, used only to show your stats (today, this week, all time, and your day streak). Individual openings older than about 400 days are deleted automatically.
This information is stored only in the app’s local preferences on your Mac. It is never sent anywhere, and we can’t see it.
What the app does not do
- It does not connect to the internet, except to check your license key and to look for updates (see below).
- It has no accounts and no sign-in.
- It has no analytics, advertising, or tracking of any kind.
- It does not use the microphone or camera, and it doesn’t read your files.
License keys and payments
LidShutter is paid. Payments and license keys are handled by Polar, who act as the seller and process your payment. We never see or store your card details.
When you activate a key, LidShutter sends Polar two things: your license key, and a label made of your Mac’s model (for example “Mac17,2”) plus a short code, so the key can be tied to your Mac. It does the same if you deactivate, and it quietly re-checks the key at most once a week while your Mac happens to be online, to confirm it hasn’t been refunded. If your Mac is offline, nothing changes and LidShutter keeps working. Your name, your Mac’s name and your files are never sent.
Polar shares your email address and country with us so we can deliver your key and help if something goes wrong.
Updates
About once a day, while your Mac is online, LidShutter asks lidshutter.com whether a newer version exists. Like any request to a website, it carries the app’s version number and your macOS version, and our host sees your IP address. Nothing else is sent, and nothing about how you use LidShutter. You can turn automatic checks off in Settings, and you can still check by hand from the menu bar.
This website
The website lidshutter.com uses Google Analytics and DataFast to count visits: which pages are viewed, where visitors come from, roughly where they are, and what kind of device they use. These tools can set cookies in your browser and send this information to Google and DataFast. The Mac app does not use either of them or any other analytics.
